JSW Greentech has announced the first commercial deployment of 100 AMPSTAR electric tractor-trucks for JSW Cement, marking a significant step in India's heavy-duty electric trucking segment.
The fleet will transport clinker and slag along an approximately 330-km corridor between Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, and Vijayanagar, Karnataka.
430 kW Power, 55T Configuration
The AMPSTAR 4×2 55T electric tractor-truck delivers 430 kW peak power and 2,600 Nm peak torque. Both the 4×2 and 6×4 tractor-truck configurations have received CMVR certification from ARAI, according to JSW Greentech.
The project brings together JSW Greentech as the vehicle manufacturer, JSW Eco-Mobility as the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) provider, and Paradeep Parivahan as the logistics partner.
Why Battery Swapping Matters
JSW Eco-Mobility will develop a dedicated logistics corridor supported by four battery-swapping stations. The approach aims to reduce vehicle downtime by replacing depleted batteries instead of waiting for conventional charging.
For heavy-duty freight, this could improve fleet utilisation but actual results will depend on swapping time, battery availability, energy costs and operating reliability.
Diesel Savings and Emissions
JSW Greentech projects that the operation will save approximately 4.5 crore litres of diesel and avoid 6,250 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over the contract period. The company also estimates cargo movement of around 1.25 lakh tonnes monthly.
However, the press release does not disclose the contract duration, battery capacity, loaded driving range, energy consumption, operating costs or the methodology behind its savings estimates.
VahanWarta Analysis: The Real Test Is Economics
The deployment combines three essential elements: a heavy-duty electric truck, dedicated energy infrastructure and predictable industrial freight demand.
But 430 kW power and battery swapping alone do not prove commercial viability. The decisive metrics will be cost per tonne-kilometre, vehicle utilisation, turnaround time and total operating cost versus diesel trucks.
JSW Greentech plans to manufacture AMPSTAR vehicles at its approximately 90-acre facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with a planned annual capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks. Its future truck portfolio is expected to expand into tippers and fixed-body dumpers.
VahanWarta's view: This is an important commercial deployment, but the bigger milestone will be proving that electric tractor-trucks can move industrial cargo reliably and competitively at scale. Actual fleet operating data not headline specifications will determine whether this model can be replicated across India's freight corridors.
